Squarespace 7.1 Shortcuts for Faster Editing
Whether you’re using a Hold Space Creative Squarespace template or starting from scratch on Squarespace, you know that editing your website can be a time-consuming task.
I’ve been using Squarespace daily for eight years now, and have picked up several time-saving tricks along the way, so I thought I’d share my favorite shortcuts with you.
Pro Tip: Bookmark this page for future reference, and come back periodically because I’ll keep adding shortcuts as I discover them!
Keyboard shortcuts for basic functions
Squarespace 7.1 offers lots of common keyboard shortcuts to help you quickly perform basic functions while editing your website. Here are some of my most frequently used:
Select all blocks in a section: Command + A (mac) / Ctrl + A (PC)
Select multiple blocks: click + drag
Duplicate a block: Command + D (mac) / Ctrl + D (PC)
Duplicate a block: Option + click + drag
Undo: Command + Z (mac) / Ctrl + Z (PC)
Copy a block: Command + C (mac) / Ctrl + C (PC)
Paste a block: Command + V (mac) / Ctrl + V (PC)
Show/Hide the grid: G
All of these shortcuts work in both desktop and mobile editing modes. Here’s a quick tutorial to show you how these keyboard shortcuts work:
Use the “Duplicate” function to save time
One of the best ways to save time as you’re building or editing your website is to duplicate existing content. Rather than creating each new element of your website from scratch, you can make copies and then tweak the content on the duplicated version.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to save time by duplicating content:
Duplicate a page
If you want to add a new page to your website, but don’t want to start from scratch, duplicate an existing page to create an exact copy. Then, change the content (text & images) on the duplicated page, tweak the page layout as needed, and voila! You’ve saved yourself hours of work.
Here’s how to duplicate a page:
Click the gear icon to open the page settings
Under General, click "Duplicate Page"
Change the title of the duplicated page by opening the page settings (gear icon) and changing the page title, navigation title, and URL slug
Edit the duplicated page to reflect your new page content
Duplicate a page section (Squarespace 7.1 only)
In Squarespace 7.1, all web pages are made up of a series of stacked sections that you can add, delete, and move. And now, you can duplicate sections with the click of a button.
Here are some common scenarios where duplicating a section saves time:
You want to feature several call-to-action sections throughout the page (ideal for long-form sales pages).
You’re using one of Squarespace’s Auto Layouts to display testimonials or other list-based content and would like more than one testimonial slider on a page.
You’re using a Hold Space Creative template and want to add more content to a given page
Here’s how to duplicate a page section:
In the section's settings, click the "Duplicate" icon
Use the arrows in the section's settings to move the duplicated section up or down the page
Duplicate a block (Squarespace 7.1 only):
Duplicating content blocks is such a time saver, especially if you’re working with multiple blocks of the same type within a single section (for example, multiple Text Blocks, Button Blocks, or Image Blocks).
Here’s how to duplicate a content block:
In the block's menu, click the "Duplicate" icon
Swap out the content in the duplicated block as needed
Save specific sections of a page to use later
Another helpful shortcut in Squarespace 7.1 is the ability to save specific sections of a page to use later. This is particularly useful if you have a section that you use frequently across multiple pages, like a call-to-action or a list of services.
To save a section:
In your page editor, navigate to the section you'd like to save
In the section’s Settings menu, click the “Save Section” icon (heart icon)
To reuse a section:
Click "Add Section" on any page
Choose "My saved sections"
Select your previously saved section
Here’s a quick tutorial to show you these steps in action:
Copy & paste individual content blocks across sections or pages
I mentioned this briefly under “keyboard shortcuts”, but copying & pasting content blocks deserves its own section because this simple shortcut has truly been a game-changer in my Squarespace editing process.
Even though we can now duplicate content blocks with the “Duplicate” button, we can’t click & drag content blocks from section to section. To remedy this, we can use the Copy & Paste keyboard shortcuts to duplicate content blocks across sections or pages.
Here’s how to do it:
Click the content block you want to duplicate.
Type Command/Ctrl + C to copy.
Navigate to the page or section where you'd like to paste the block
Type Command/Ctrl + V to paste.
